Physical Therapy Massage Techniques

Therapeutic massage techniques utilized by physical therapists are a vastly expanded variation of the historic therapeutic massage procedures of the Greeks, Egyptians and others.

A therapist can use various techniques including classic massage methods like petrissage (kneading manipulation of the muscle), effleurage (soft gliding over tissue) or more advanced methods like deep friction.

Physical Therapy
With an intensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology, massage therapists use hands-on techniques to reduce your pain, scale back muscle spasm and increase overall mobility.

1. Myofascial Massage
  • This is a manual massage technique used to stretch and release bonds between fascia and integument.
  • This process mainly focuses on eliminating pain, increasing the range of motion and balancing the body.
  • The therapy releases fascial restrictions and allows the muscles to move more efficiently.
  • It is mainly practiced by skin rolling or applying a pressure or compression in various directions or by applying shear force in the affected area.
  • It is commonly used by sports therapists and also by physical therapists.

2. Reflexology
  • It is a type of “Foot massage”, commonly practiced by Chinese.
  • Reflexologists believe that certain spots on the sole of the foot corresponds to an internal organ so applying appropriate pressure to specific points will relax the specific organ or muscle and helps to reduce the pain.
  • The theory of this type of foot massage believes that the ailment of an inside organ is related to the nerve ending on the foot.
  • Though reflexology will not be used to diagnose or cure a disorder, therapists tend to use this as a complementary therapy to other treatments.
  • It is used as a complementary treatment in conditions like diabetes, asthma, cancer, sinusitis, kidney and many more.

3. Soft tissue massages therapy
  • The therapy involves direct massage on the muscle and other soft tissues of your body. Soft tissue technique targets your muscles, ligaments, tendons or other connective.
  • Soft tissue massage therapy helps to reduce pain, aches, muscular overuse and injuries that are attributed to your body’s soft tissues.
  • If this technique is employed after accidents involving trauma and harm, it greatly alleviates the development of painful muscular patterning.

Physical Therapist Goals

Physical therapy is the medical science of using force and movement to remedy impairments, increase mobility, improve function and raise the quality of life.

The process of a physical therapist includes examination, diagnosis, prognosis and physical intervention. They seek to overcome dysfunctions of movement and decrease pain. They also focus on prevention of injury and promotion of well being.

Physical Therapy
Physical therapy healing is used for multiple purposes in a diverse variety of health-related industries but there are ultimately three main goals for every physical therapist; these are examine, diagnose and treat. The physical therapist will examine you and ask you questions.

After this they will offer you a diagnosis and then they will come up with a plan for treatment which may include manipulation of your joints and prescribing exercises.

Goals of Physical Therapy
  • Any physical therapist’s ultimate goal is to treat the pain in a safe way.
  • They work to improve the mobility and motion, resulting in pain-free movement.
  • A physical therapist helps you to improve your physical activity and increase the quality of daily life thereby enabling you to pursue your leisure activities.
  • They offer a healthy balanced system, day-by-day making you more physically independent.
  • They offer a non-invasive alternative to drugs and surgery to treat injury and pain.
  • Physical therapists work collaboratively with their patients to produce treatment plans that are specific to their challenges and needs.
  • They use various techniques like exercises, massage therapy, joint manipulation, hot/cold therapy and electric stimulation to achieve the goal of restoring mobility and decreasing pain.
  • They follow rehabilitation strategies with specific exercise to strengthen the muscles as well as to improve the posture and endurance. With the help of massage therapy and traction machines, they improve functionality and pain reduction.
  • A physical therapist teaches us how to use assistive devices like crutches, walkers, and canes to increase patient independence with moving and walking.
  • They also advise on how to prevent further damage or injury and how to maintain an active and happy life.
