What is Sciatica?
- Sciatica is pain originating from the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the widest and the longest nerve that runs from the lower back, through the buttocks, and down the legs through the knees ending up in the feet.
- This nerve controls several muscles and supplies sensation to the skin of the foot and most of the lower leg.
- Any compression caused to this nerve is termed as “Sciatica”. “Sciatica” is often confused with lower back pain but it is not limited to the back.
- Sciatica is a condition rather than a symptom related to a problem involving the sciatic nerve.
- The spinal column is made up of three main parts:
- Vertebrae (individual bone in the spine), Nerve and Disks.
- Disks are made of cartilage that acts as a cushion between each vertebra and makes the spine flexible. Any damage or slipping of the disks will give compression to sciatic nerves causing pain.
- Nearly 90% of sciatica is caused by a herniated (slipped) disk.
- A chronic infection within the spine.
- An injury caused in the spine.
- Tumors in the spine compressing the sciatic nerve.
- Spondylolisthesis is a condition where a disk slips forward over the vertebra thus pinching the sciatic nerve.
Common risk factors
There are a few common risk factors for sciatica, they are:
Profession: if your job involves in the lifting of heavy loads for a long period then you are at risk.
Age factor: people in their 30s and 40s have a higher risk of developing sciatica due to the deterioration of disks.
Lifestyle: people who are physically inactive and who sit for long periods are more likely to develop sciatica, compared with physically active individuals.
Pregnancy: During pregnancy most of the women will come across a sciatica condition.
How to treat Sciatica by Chiropractor?
- Sciatica is a painful condition, so a patient requires pain killers and an anti-inflammatory drug immediately for a temporary relief. However, a complete diagnosis is taken before starting the treatment.
- A combination of Chiropractic adjustments, stretching, massage and cryotherapy will give a permanent remedy for sciatica.
- Chiropractic adjustment will address any mis-alignments of the spine and pelvis and takes the pressure off the nerve and helps the recovery of any slipped discs.
- Ice/cold therapy decreases the inflammation and controls the pain.
- A gentle heat is induced in the affected area by sound waves (ultrasound) which will increase the circulation of blood decreasing the pain and swelling.
